COVID-19: Apple offered 20 million masks and 1 million visors

Apple has been donating and producing information to help fight COVID-19. In the past, the company had left its intention to donate masks to healthcare professionals in the United States and Europe. So, to give an account of what the company has done so far, Tim Cook appeared on Twitter as a balance sheet to mention that Apple offered more than 20 million masks and is waiting to deliver more material.

According to the CEO, the company has been purchasing masks within its supply chain and has now designed a visor that it has already started delivering.

Tim Cook presses Apple suppliers to make more masks

Tim Cook again updated information about Apple's ongoing efforts to help healthcare professionals in the COVID-19 outbreak. As we can see on his Twitter account, the Apple CEO posted a new video stating that the company has already provided more than 20 million masks to healthcare professionals and that it continues to try to buy more.

Apple is dedicated to supporting the worldwide response to COVID-19. We’ve now sourced over 20M masks through our supply chain. Our design, engineering, operations and packaging teams are also working with suppliers to design, produce and ship face shields for medical workers. pic.twitter.com/3xRqNgMThX

More than a week ago, Cook said he had purchased and donated 10 million masks to healthcare professionals, and now that number has risen to 20 million. These masks are being purchased through Apple's supply chain.

In addition to the masks, Tim Cook revealed that Apple has designed a personalized face shield for healthcare professionals as well. So, as he showed in the video, the visor is simple but effective and the first shipment of these facial shields arrived at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara Valley last week. Tim Cook praised the pleasure with which health and medical professionals received this material.

Apple wants to deliver millions of visors in the coming weeks

Apple expects to reach 1 million shipments for facial shields by the end of this week and to consistently ship 1 million a week thereafter.

Full transcript of Cook's video is below:

In these very difficult and challenging times, I hope you stay safe and well. Teams across Apple have been working hard on ways to support our heroic medical frontline professionals, and I want to share two updates today.

First, the number of masks we have managed to obtain through our supply chain has increased to more than 20 million worldwide. It is a truly global effort and we are working continuously and closely with governments at all levels to ensure that they are donated to the most deprived places.

Second, we launched a company-wide effort that brings together product designers, engineering operations, packaging teams and our suppliers to design, produce and send visors to healthcare professionals.

Our first shipment was delivered to the Kaiser hospital in the Santa Clara Valley last week, and feedback from the doctors was very positive. These packages are flat, 100 per box. Each shield is assembled in less than two minutes and is fully adjustable. We are supplying materials and manufacturing in the USA and China.

We plan to send more than 1 million by the end of this week and more than 1 million a week thereafter. We are working closely with medical professionals and government officials from across the U.S. to get them where they are most urgently needed. We hope to rapidly expand distribution beyond the US in both of these efforts.

Our focus is on unique ways that Apple can help, urgently meeting the essential needs of caregivers and on a scale that circumstances demand.

For Apple, this is a labor of love and gratitude, and we will share more of our efforts over time. However, each of us can stop the virus from spreading by following expert advice to stay at home and practice social detachment.

Thank you for everything you are doing to help in your own life. Thanks again to those at the forefront of this fight. Stay safe and stay healthy.
